Ten alumni form Mount Mercy’s first Young Alumni Council

In an effort to recognize and support young alumni while connecting them to their alma mater, Josie Takes, alumni relations coordinator, helped create Mount Mercy University’s Young Alumni Council.

Young Alumni Council members for the 2014-2015 are:

Michael Kaduce ’09 – President
Maria Upmeyer ’10 – Vice President
Emily Muhlbach ’08 – Secretary
Marie Appel ’06
Sara Bodensteiner ’13
Clint Dietrich ’08
Kelsey Hansen ’11
Katie Kielkucki ’06
Erin Templeton ’07
Sarah Watson ’08

As of today, young alumni make up 29 percent of the current overall alumni body and 12 percent of the university’s current alumni donors. It is the goal of the Council to develop stronger relationships with the young alumni demographic, especially those who’ve graduated in the last 10 years. By strengthening these key relationships, the Council hopes to uncover additional ways to successfully promote and sustain Mount Mercy University.

To encourage greater alumni engagement, the Council, which meets three times per year, hopes to identify new opportunities for programs and services specifically aimed towards young alumni and current students.

“We have some very high hopes which include several new events around the state of Iowa, homecoming activities, and doubling the number of GOLD Members (Graduates of the Last Decade giving $25 or more),” wrote Council President Kaduce in an open letter to alumni. “I have no doubt we will rise to the challenge because just like you, who have great memories of campus, faculty, and friends; we also share the ambition to set large goals and the drive to succeed.”

This April, with the aid of many on the Council and a generous sponsorship from TaxACT, the Office of Alumni Relations held a post-graduation preparation seminar for current Mount Mercy students called Life After Graduation. During the one-day event, more than 150 students attended seminars on topics like taxes and human resources, practiced marketing themselves through mock interviews and networking events, and even learned some etiquette tips during a special luncheon.

Through a wide variety of events, volunteer opportunities, and outreach the Young Alumni Council will be able to continue living out the mission of Mount Mercy University and help others connect and engage in ways that weren’t readily available.

If you’re interested in joining the Young Alumni Council, online applications  are available, and any questions about the Young Alumni Council can be directed to alumni@mtmercy.edu or 319-286-4412.
