Seven Sisters of Mercy celebrate jubileesAlumni — Summer 2012
Seven Sisters of Mercy celebrated jubilees on June 10 during a reception at Sacred Heart Convent, representing a combined total of 425 years of service. Sisters celebrating jubilees include: Sister Roseline Kos JC’48; Sister Mary Wilma Wolf JC’43; Sister Genevieve Birchard JC’40; Sister Mary Alice Ernst JC’48; Sister Roxanne Dolak JC’66; Sister Rose Marie Martensen JC’67; and Sister Anne Healy.
Sister Roseline Kos
Sister Roseline Kos celebrated her 75th jubilee. She was born in 1917 in Charles City, Iowa. In 1937, she entered the Sisters of Mercy in Cedar Rapids. She hasserved in various educational positions in Minnesota and Iowa, and was a faculty member at Mount Mercy College for 10 years. Sister Roseline is retired at SacredHeart Convent in Cedar Rapids where she continues her volunteer work and prayer ministry.
Sister Mary Wilma Wolf
Sister Mary Wilma Wolf celebrated her jubilee of 75 years as a Sister of Mercy. A native of Little Cedar, Iowa, Sister Mary Wilma was born in 1918 and graduated fromMount Mercy Junior College in 1943, obtaining bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Iowa. She taught at Mount Mercy for more than 40 years and retired in 1988. She enjoys volunteering at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids, crocheting baby blankets and prayer shawls, and sharing her crocheting talents with special friends.
Sister Genevieve Birchard
Sister Genevieve (Mary Innocentia) Birchard celebrated her 70th jubilee. She was born in 1920 in Hazleton, Iowa. Sister Genevieve entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1941 in Cedar Rapids. She began her ministry as a high school teacher in schools across Iowa. She also spent 12 years serving as the business manager and an assistant professor at Mount Mercy College. She retired to Sacred Heart Covent in Cedar Rapids in 2000 and enjoys knitting and prayer ministries.
Sister Mary Alice Ernst
Sister Mary Alice Ernst celebrated her 70th jubilee. Born in 1923, she joined the Sisters of Mercy in 1942 at Sacred Heart Convent. Sister Mary Alice spent more than30 years working in education in Iowa schools. She has also ministered at The Benedictine School in Ridgley, Md. In 2009, she relocated to Omaha, where she is engaged in prayer ministry, while also developing her artistic talents, and living with the Sisters of Mercy at the West Midwest Villa in Omaha, Neb.
Sister Roxanne Dolak
Sister Roxanne Dolak celebrated her 60th jubilee. She is a 1966 Mount Mercy graduate with a degree in music education and taught music her first 15 years as a Sisterof Mercy. She earned a nursing degree from College of St. Catherine in St. Paul, Minn., in 1972. For the past 37 years, Sister Roxanne has served at Kalispell RegionalMedical Center in Kalispell, Mont., a hospital started by her religious community in 1910.
Sister Rose Marie Martensen
Sister Rose Marie Martensen celebrated her 50th jubilee as a Sister of Mercy. Born in 1942, she was first introduced to the Sisters of Mercy when she attended St. Patrick’s School in Garryowen, Iowa, in 1948. Sister Rose Marie entered the Sisters of Mercy in Cedar Rapids in 1961, and received her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Mount Mercy College in 1967. She spent time as a teacher in parochial schools and then transitioned to parish work throughout Iowa.
Sister Anne Marie Healy
Sister Anne Marie Healy is celebrating her 25th jubilee. She was born in Dubuque, Iowa, in 1944. Sister Anne joined the Sisters of Mercy in Detroit, Mich., in 1962, and remained affiliated with them through 1977. She re-entered the Mercy community in Cedar Rapids in 2002. She received her bachelor’s degree in nursing from Mercy College of Detroit in Mich., earned a master’s degree from the University of Colorado, and a Ph.D. from The University of Iowa. In ministry, Sister Anne has served as a staff nurse at Mercy hospitals in Michigan and Iowa. She taught in Mount Mercy’s Department of Nursing from 1982–2004, and has served nursing programs at various schools.
