Family honors mother during special mass

On what would have been Rose Mary Klein Schaefer’s 89th birthday, her family and friends gathered with the Mount Mercy community to celebrate her legacy in a special way.

When Schaefer JC’42 passed away in September 2011, her family designated a memorial fund in her name, the gifts of which would go toward campus ministry at Mount Mercy. The memorial fund also enabled her family to purchase an engraved chalice and paten, which they donated to the Chapel of Mercy. Family and friends gathered in the Chapel of Mercy and used the chalice and paten during Eucharist for the first time on February 15, Schaefer’s birthday.

Four of Schaefer’s 12 children were able to attend the special ceremony: Miriam Schaefer Eick, Jeannette Schaefer, Elaine Schaefer Siebel and Coleen Schaefer Hughes; as well as life-long friend Alice Earl Marks JF’42 and goddaughter Lynn Marks Mitchell RN’63, ’82.

“We are extremely proud to have done this for our mother. Just realizing this is a permanent tribute for her love of Mount Mercy gives you a warm feeling,” the family wrote in a letter to campus after mass.

Father Dustin Vu blessed the chalice and paten, and Executive Director for Mission and Ministry Sr. Shari Sutherland led the congregation in worship.
